A song I have been practicing on the guitar - quite a few mistakes and ropey strumming (no plectrum and nylon strings) so more practice required but thought I would share it mistakes and all. I know this isn't X factor and if it was I would not be expecting to win it anyway. Hope you like it.
I'm sure my brother or Dad (or both) will be able to confirm for me that this is actually a Scottish song - everywhere I look this song has been covered by Irish folk bands and I think everyone is under the impression that it is Irish - but I believe it is Scottish. I hope I am right.
Absolutely brilliant Steph! Have listened to that quite a few times since I got home from work last night and have started to work it out on the banjo so I can play along. If I get good enough, I'll send you a recording.
ReplyDeleteAnd you're half-right: The tune is Scottish, from the 18th century (was called the Braes O' Balquihidder, or however you spell it), but I'm afraid the words in this case were indeed written by an Irishman... and only in 1957. Still, I'm pretty sure there's a law that says mentioning heather in a song automatically makes it Scottish. ]:)
Speak to you soon, P.
Cheers mate - I knew you would know. So I am kind of half right?
ReplyDeleteI kind of agree with you that the use of heather should qualify it as Scottish.
The chords I played on this were G, C, Em and there may be a D as well - or maybe not. Have a much around. Really simple - when I locate the TAB is used on my Mac I will send it through to you.
Look forward to hearing the banjo version. ;o)
Great stuff Steph. Time to add music teaching to your CV.
ReplyDeleteHave you become more Scottish since going to NZ?! I rather enjoyed your performance and I must say that your guitar playing has improved since Jobbiehill circa 1998. (Good god we've been friends a long time!) Gam x
ReplyDeleteThanks Gordon - I don't know if I could teach music - I don't really know what I am doing to be honest.
ReplyDeleteGammon - thanks, that's almost a compliment from you - that's perhaps the first in our 11 year friendship. and Yes, I have become more Scottish - so much so that in 6 months time I will look and sound almost identical to the Proclaimers.
